This Black History Month, we’re highlighting a few incredible leaders on the state and federal level who are leading California’s fight for climate justice and democracy.
Sydney Kamlager-Dove (California, District 37)

Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove is a strong champion for environmental justice, climate action, racial justice, and democracy.
Born in Chicago, Kamlager-Dove got her first taste of politics working with her grandmother to help elect Harold Washington – the city’s first Black mayor. When she left for college, Kamlager-Dove moved to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California where she studied Political Science. During her time there, the city erupted in grief and outrage following the police brutality against Rodney King– catalyzing Kamlager-Dove to work with Rebuild LA and the Los Angeles Festival, organizations focused on creating jobs in public arts programs and restored communities.
After years of serving the people of Los Angeles in local offices, she was elected to the California State Assembly in 2018 and State Senate in 2021. There, she authored bills to center racial justice and equity in California’s climate and environmental policies.
Kamlager-Dove was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2023. As a representative for California’s 37th District, she secured $21 million in federal funding for climate solutions in Los Angeles, worked to cut climate pollution in Southern California through EPA grants, and fought for passing a Green New Deal.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters is a fierce advocate for environmental progress and one of the most powerful and well-known women in American politics.
Waters began working at the age of 13 in factories and segregated restaurants in St. Louis, Missouri before moving to Los Angeles. In 1961, she began her long tenure in public service as a teacher and volunteer coordinator at the Head Start program in Watts. She was elected for the first time to the California State Assembly in 1976, eventually rising to the powerful position of Democratic Caucus Chair. In 1990, Congresswoman Waters became the United States House Representative for California District 29, where she has been reelected consistently over the years through renumberings to District 35 and 43.
Waters has made history as the first woman and first African American Chair of the House Financial Committee. She’s also served as an integral member of the Democratic National Committee since 1980, chaired the Congressional Black Caucus from 1997-1998, and co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
Through decades of work in both the state and federal leadership, Waters has spearheaded landmark legislation and tirelessly advocated for her community and civil rights. She’s secured resources for economic and infrastructure development, training programs, and environmental preservation work. Waters’ career has been spent advocating for international peace, justice, and human rights; she’s expanded health care access, led efforts to expand housing opportunities, and fought for the rights of her constituents in southern Los Angeles, Gardena, Inglewood, and Torrance. Waters has been a fearless and vocal advocate for the American people and justice, and is one of the most influential legislators in Congress today.

Newly elected to the United States House of Representatives, Congresswoman Lateefah Simon was one of our first endorsements in the last election.
A transit and social justice champion, Simon has worked as a leader in the transportation and clean energy field for years, fighting for our communities at the frontlines of the climate crisis and pollution. Her career fighting for social justice began in her teens as a community organizer, becoming the youngest-ever Executive Director of the Young Women’s Freedom Center. In 2004, she led the Back on Track program in partnership with then-San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris to offer a second chance for nonviolent offenders.
Congresswoman Simon’s career has included leadership of multiple large organizations in the Bay Area and always focused on tackling systemic inequities and advancing civil rights. In 2016, she was elected to serve on the Bay Area Rapid Transportation (BART) board, becoming Board President in 2020 and working to improve public safety and accessibility of the public transportation system.
Simon was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2024. Her work has always centered on the intersection of clean energy and transportation infrastructure, and we’re excited to see her continue to progress bold climate action as the House Representative for California District 12.
