Congratulations to LA City Councilwoman, now Congresswoman-elect Janice Hahn!
With 100% of precincts reporting, Hahn received 54.6% of the votes and bested radical Tea Party candidate Craig Huey by over 8 points. This is particularly notable because that’s almost exactly the margin as noted in yesterday’s PPP poll. Despite the media talking about CD 36 as some sort of horse race, level political heads (that did not have a financial incentive to sell more newspapers or increase readership) pretty much already knew how this race was going to turn out. With an 18 point registration advantage, Huey was going to need a miracle to pull this election off. He didn’t get one.
The top two primary system that helped Huey win months ago was brand new making the results difficult to predict, but the type of head-to-head race between two candidates is almost as old as the nation itself. The lesson here is that there’s much we can still learn about the top two primary and how things will play out next June, but don’t expect too many surprises in next year’s general election in November.
CLCV was active in this race by contributing to Hahn’s general election campaign and contacting our many members in the district to vote for Hahn. She will be a strong vote for the environment, and our colleagues at the League of Conservation Voters in D.C. look forward to working with her on her green jobs plan.
